Remunicipalisation and management of the urban water cycle

Sant Antoni M. Claret, 167, Barcelona

Remunicipalización y bases para la gestión del ciclo urbano del agua

The city of Barcelona has recently taken steps to place itself in favour of public water management, thereby reinforcing a trend that has been steadily growing both in Europe and in Catalonia; that of water remunicipilisation.

This trend has brought with it a new set of challenges and questions to be addressed. What tools are needed to facilitate remunicipilation processes in interested cities? What does the consideration of water as a human right mean and what are technical and legal implications are involved? What principles and practical tools will enable progress towards empowering, transparent and truly democratic water management?

With a view to exploring some of these questions and ultimately contributing to a clearer, collective definition of the public water management model in the 21st century, the Ayutament of Barcleona (Barcelona city council) and Aigua es Vida are organizing the ‘Remunicipalisation and guidelines for management of the urban water cycle’ congress on the 21st of March in Barcelona. Amoung the attendees shall be APE President and deputy mayor of Paris Celia Blauel, MEP Lynn Boylan who will share the Irish perspective and APE Vice president and President of CAP Holding, Alessandro Russo, who will participate in the roundtable on the human right to water.
