The COP21 has highlighted the relevance of water resources for meeting the sustainability challenge. Innovation and technological solutions in this sector are crucial to achieve sustainable land planning and management.

Social, economic and climate changes have generated issues such as unstable hydrogeological arrangements, phreatic aquifer raising, storm water discharge - that require a new multidisciplinary approach and multilevel governance. A strong connection between territorial planning and water management is needed.

Water cycle management is an exemplary sector to test place-based policies integrated in specific territorial and local contexts.

More specifically, storm water overflows are the cause of an increasing number of troubles in many areas of the world, both in terms of water quantity and quality. The EU, in this specific field, seeks to cope with such critical situations through integrated solutions based on the combination of engineering and biological measures. Indeed, in densely populated areas, only an integrated and comprehensive approach can guarantee the safety and sustainability of urban and non-urban areas.
